I really thought Italy would be better. I dedicated 9 nights to it, and so far, the only place that has stood out is seeing Florence. In Melbourne, Italians are known for being concreters, tilers, their coffee and restaurants, gelato and being Catholic... and it's all the same here. The houses of concrete arches, mission brown or orange brick with mission brown trim, roller shutters on every window so you can't let the world in, just makes it feel blah and stuck in the Seventies. Tonight is actually the first hotel in five that we don't have a tiled floor in the bedroom. We have seen plenty of Fiats and Vespas on the road, and were actually trailed through Tuscany by five red Ferraris lead by the club car burgundy Ferrari which brought a little excitement to the undulating hills of the olive groves and grapevines, but otherwise, it's a fairly dirty, inconsiderate, unfriendly place to be. The French and Swiss say 'Bonjour' to everyone, which is so nice to hear... in Italy, I've only heard a complete stranger walking passed say 'Bongiorno' once. The locals don't have a sense of happiness or pride in the air... it's a really shame.
Our first night was in Torino where we only ventured to the local pizzeria to have our first pizza in Italy. Who knew that pizza was pretty much all we would be eating. We then went to Switzerland for 3 nights (which, as you know, was amazing!).
Milan felt boxy and full of shopping malls for the fashionistas who need to say 'I bought this shirt/skirt/scarf/frock/pantsuit/necklace/watch/whatever it is from Milan' and hope their friends think they are special. We essentially stayed in our glammed up hostel which had shitty internet and the safest thing to do was order pizza in rather than walk the streets hoping to find a decent restaurant (and from what we heard overnight with all the yelling and fighting in the streets, it was definitely the safest thing to do).
We drove to Pisa on our way to Florence, which I will admit, was beautiful, but full of shonky salespeople trying to sell you tacky souvenirs or rip off sunglasses, handbags or watches.
Florence was charming... We got to our hotel around 2.30pm and left at about 3.15pm to catch a tram into the city. We felt safe in Florence and got back to our hotel around 8pm... We walked to Ponte Vecchio - the iconic bridge with loads of jewellers on it, I found a ceramic studio that had a turtle (I collect turtles from around the world as my memento of each place - some places, I don't expect to find any, as a turtle, by nature, is a tropical memento, but so far, I found a marble one in the Lakes District in England, an antique Art Deco wooden one in Provence (and a pair of salt and pepper shakers in typical white glazed ceramic turtles in Mougins near Cannes) and a hand-painted one in Florence....all my favourite places. We had dinner overlooking the Palazzo Vecchio towards the mock Statue of David in this cute little ristorante where - hallelujah, I was able to get a beautiful salad and the boys had a nicely made hamburger with salad on the side.
We drove through Tuscany to get to Rome. Had to throw the Ferrari pic in there!
Rome was dirty, but in some ways, fairly cheap. A bus/train ticket is 1.50 Euro for 100 minutes. We found another pizzeria where we could buy pizza by the kilo. For the three of us, including drinks (and I had a beer), we paid 12.60 Euro... so we went back the next night too. On our day trip to the heart of Rome, we checked out the Colosseum, the Trevi Fountain and the Pathenon... but really, I couldn't stand the crowds. We also discovered one of those gelato places you hear about that they con you inside their doors to buy a gelato, and before you know it, you pay 25 Euro for one ice-cream. But I was smart... I checked out the menu before ordering and asked for the 3.50 Euro gelato, asked what we could get for the 3.50 Euro price and got our 3.50 Euro gelato. But a lady who came in after us, was given her gelato, went to pay for it, was told the 25 Euro price and handed it back, refusing to pay. There was a huge commotion between the staff and the customer, but the customer just walked out. I must admit, they do make a pretty display of cones to lure you in!
So today, we drove down to Pompei with an end stay in Naples. We arrived in Pompei as the sun was shining, but there were dark clouds looming in... so much so, that we traipsed through the relics in a massive thunderstorm that created plenty of flash flooding in the streets. We were absolutely drenched, but the boys had fun! We are in a nicer hotel tonight with fabulous internet (it's been since Switzerland that we have had decent WiFi, hence the reason why it's been a while between blogs). I've been warned that Naples can be a little rough, so we will stay confined to our hotel room, and there is a restaurant on site. But tomorrow, we will drive along the Amalfi Coast and see the beauty Italy really has to offer!
The life, the loves and the loathes of being a single mum, and all the adventures we go on!

Enjoying the Swiss Mountains
I'm a little behind on my blogging from our 6 week epic adventure due to some very average internet connections at the hotels we've been staying at. On Monday, we travelled from Geneva to Haute Nendaz, a gorgeous ski village high in the mountains near Sion in Switzerland. I wanted the boys to have an authentic Swiss visit, so we stayed in a Swiss Chalet enjoying beautiful mountain views. After we were allowed an early check in, we decided to go for a hike on one of the 'Bisses' - walking tracks predominantly on private land that are open to the public and capture the absolute wonderment of the mountainside. We went on the Bisse Vieux... it's supposed to be a 7 kilometre walk, however I told the boys that we will go an hour one way (but I actually made them go about 1 hour and 15 minutes hehe!!), before we made our return journey. The boys loved filling their water bottles with the crystal clear (and icy cold) water. Best water ever! And they tell me that this was their 3 favourite day of the trip (behind Madame Tussauds and Mont Blanc)... Sometimes the good things are for free! Here are some highlights:
On Tuesday, we drove from Haute Nendaz to Milan through the Swiss Alps. It was stunning countryside through Rosswald, and after we left the gorgeous mountainous terrain, Italy looked really boring and flat! And to be honest, unless you are interested in fashion, Milan is a little bit the same... happy to be out of there!

The Halfway Mark Evaluation
As it's been 3 weeks since we started our epic adventure, I thought I would ask my boys over dinner tonight what have been the highlights and lowlights of our trip so far... as all travel can have some very big extremes. As well as lowlights, they also included their disappointed list. I too have a list of my own... so let's compare.
The boys' Top 5 Highlights:
1. Madame Tussauds, London, England
2. Snow in summer at Mont Blanc, Chamonix, France
3. Buckingham Palace, London, England
4. Edinburgh Castle, Edinburgh, Scotland
5. Chateau d'Origny, Ouches, France
The boys' Top 5 Lowlights:
1. Hotel Armstrong, Paris, France (room was flooded and location wasn't nice).
2. Take lots of photos for me while I'm driving!
3. It rained the day we saw the main attractions in Paris (it really has been the only day it's rained).
4. Waiting in line for over 2 hours at the Catacombs, Paris France
5. Beatrix Potter's House (it breaks my heart :( )
The boys' Top 5 Disappointments:
1. Legoland, Windsor, England
2. Eiffel Tower, Paris, France
3. The Science and Industry Museum, Paris, France
4. Bad Wi-Fi connections at some hotels
5. Some of the 'free breakfasts' have been fairly ordinary.
My Top 5 Highlights:
1. Traveling through Provence, France
2. Mont Blanc, Chamonix France
3. Chateau d'Origny, Ouches, France
4. Punting on the Cam, Cambridge, England
5. Painswick, Cotswolds, England
My Top 5 Lowlights:
1. Toll Roads (can't you tell!)
2. Stingy hotel manager in Edinburgh, Scotland
3. Being scammed in Paris (twice!)
4. The Australian dollar going down at least 10% after being so strong.
5. Hotel Armstrong, Paris
My Top 5 Disappointments:
1. Legoland, Windsor, England
2. The French Riviera is just like the Gold Coast with all its high rise ugliness.
3. Liverpool was drab and dreary.
4. I packed too many winter clothes, thinking that parts of England/Scotland would be colder.
5. That I could have seen the better more romantic side of Paris, but it wasn't to be with 2 boys.
Overall, it's been an amazing trip which we will hold dear to us for the rest of our lives... still 3 more weeks to go of Switzerland, Italy, Austria, Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium. Lots to see, lots to pack in and lots more to add to our highlights and lowlights. Hope you're enjoying our little trip as much as we are. Suzy x

Yesterday Sea, Today Snow!
Over the past 2 days, we have travelled through 4 countries (France, Monaco, back into France, Italy, France, Italy, again back into France and now we are in Switzerland!), and spent WAY TOO MUCH on toll roads (41.40 Euro to go through the 11km Mont Blanc tunnel & 40 Francs just to enter Switzerland to use the motorways... but then there was a 21.20 Euro charge and 3 smaller charges of 1.30 Euro, 3.80 Euro & 1.80 Euro! UUUGGGHHH!!! And that was all today!), but we have seen some amazing scenery.
Firstly, we drove along the French Riviera to take in the sights of Cannes, Nice, Monte Carlo and ending in a little place called Grimaldi where we had lunch to enjoy the vista of the Mediterranean Sea. It was exhausting driving, making sure not to hit the people wearing white (it was like it was a prescribed uniform for tourists), the stage crew creating some gala event on the foreshore in Cannes, the umpteen amount of motorcycles and Vespas, and somehow concentrating on the road. Here are some highlights... (sorry about the dirty car windows, they did get a clean today...)

We arrived in Italy and stayed in Torino last night... so the most apt thing to do for our short Italian stay was to eat pizza and gelato.
This morning, we travelled to France to go on the Mont Blanc tramway that starts in Le Fayet, but with a combination of roadworks blocking turn offs, Sat Nav not understanding that there were roadworks plus new roads in the way to take us to Le Fayet, I changed my request to Chamonix where the Tourist Office is, to see if we could find this place!! But, by doing that, we found another tramway that seemed to be more to our liking, as it took us up 3850m to the snow, where the Le Fayet tramway didn't seem to promise the same Summer blanket of whiteness. So for a little more money than the tramway, and less wait (as the Le Fayet tramway only went ever 2 hours), we caught the tramway up to Aiguille Midi, with each tram ride running every 10 minutes. We first went up to the summit and admired the panoramic views, and then we went down to 2300m point and the boys got to play in the snow! Very happy campers they were!
So tonight we stay in Geneva for a couple of days and I get to meet for the first time my high school pen pal... she used to write to me in French and I used to write to her in English. It's been 27 years in the making, so it will be a special day.

Provence Perfected!
Over the last couple of days, we've been driving through the breathtaking countryside of Provence. We have been lucky that the weather has been beautiful - 25-35 degrees Celsius, and each place we have stayed at has had a pool, so the boys are absolutely loving it.
We drove along the picturesque Rhone...
Here is the view from the pool at our guest house in Mougins... overlooking Cannes.
We drove along the picturesque Rhone...
Stayed in a 18th century old post office near Avignon (with a pool!).
Drove through the hair-raising tiny streets of the walled city of Avignon.
Found some gorgeous towns including Lourmarin, where we stopped to 'be tourists' and walk the streets, finishing with some locally made ice-cream.
Here is the view from the pool at our guest house in Mougins... overlooking Cannes.
And had dinner in the city centre of Mougins... just delightful!
